Goodbye

Our last morning in Maine was overcast and drizzly,  a rarity on this trip, whereas other times it's been what we experience all week, only to be greeted by the sun just as we're prying the sheets off the bed and muscling all of our musty, bug-repellant, sun-screen coated clothes back into our bags.

Overcast felt right. We'd had this sweet week all together, the kids entwined in some secret club of DNA connection. Did they bicker? Yes. Were feelings hurt? Once in a while.

But really, their union felt like a restoration of the natural order of things. My desire to keep them together overpowered my selfish yearning for a return to routine, a hot shower, and my own bed.

It hurt to say goodbye.
