Return to headquarters immediately

Agatha and Lucas are the oldest of our eight-children pack here in Maine, but not by much. All of the cousins were born within six and a half years of each other.

Three years ago, which is the last time Lucas and Agatha came to Maine, I remember watching their mom, Judith, lounging in a chair reading and thinking, "someday, that will be me."

With a two and a five-year-old, that someday felt very far away. But now it's here. Stella and Zoey, along with the rest of the gang, entertain themselves all day long and into the night, sometimes way past when I throw in the towel.

We're in that delicious sweet spot — not in the high-maintenance, (though adorable,) early phase of parenting, but not yet entering the potentially more terse and tumultuous teenage years. There are still stuffed animals all over the place, but there are also board games, sewing projects, and children floating out to the buoy on their rafts, all alone, to soak up the goodness of one of the most beautiful days we've ever experienced here.

Quite a few of the kids have passed their swim test, which involves making it all the way around the float unattended.

And they've invented their own spy test, which involves trying to hear a whisper issued at the far end of the hallway. Really, we have no idea what world they're in half the time, but there is a headquarters, and a lot of yelling about returning to it immediately. Seems like a good place to be.

"Zoey, you're going to float out to sea!" "I don't care!!!"
