I've learned that some apples taste sweetest if touched by a light frost, but that a deep frost damages the fruit. How to know which type of frost is coming? Good question.
My meteorologist is our carpool pal, Tricia. She knows what's up. One day, she called from school to say that she hoped our kids didn't have plans because she was taking them to pick apples. And by that, she didn't mean some delightful and quaint experience filling up a bucket. Child labor was required to get up in the trees and shake down an entire trunk's worth of fruit.
The girls were more than willing to oblige.
And our applesauce-making party went late into the night:
The warning of frost spurred our green-thumb-in-training to harvest the entire garden.
